The Ghosts of Mr. Dickens

Creative Producer Theatre Design


A new piece of writing set during Dickens’ second tour of America. We aimed to produce a classical play without conforming to classical staging. Produced as Untold Theatre (, this twelve-date tour performed at theatres and community venues across England. We secured successful funding from Arts Council England and the Jim Laker Fund.

My role

I coordinated all venue bookings. I’m pleased that over 50% of our venues were in rural areas, reported low arts engagement, or both. Following this I designed and coordinated the marketing campaign, securing a 10% total sales increase upon our previous tour. In addition to my producer role, I designed lighting, sound and digital projections for the show.

Creative process

The design for this production was focused on the elements, particularly the ocean. This is the story of Dickens’ final voyage to America, reflecting upon his past. Because of this, I chose ephemeral sounds - breaths, whispers, wind and waves - to underline the fleeting nature of memories and our time alive. We experimented with projecting onto the actors and onto a variety of other materials. In one instance we projected footage onto translucent fabric to suggest the appearance of a ghost.
